A tongue-tie is a short frenulum that restricts the tongue's ability to function properly.  A lip-tie is a tight labial frenulum which keeps the upper lip tethered to the gum line.  Both of them can cause issues not only for mothers and nursing babies but can continue to cause issues into adulthood.
 
Symptoms in Mother:
  • Cracked / bleeding nipples
  • Misshapen nipple / lipstick shaped after nursing
  • Painful latch
  • Vasospasms
  • Low milk supply
  • Recurrent plugged ducts, blister/blebs, or mastitis
  • Recurrent thrush
  • Overactive letdown or painful oversupply
Symptoms in Baby:
  • Poor latch / sucking, or unusually strong suction
  • Clicking sound when nursing
  • Very low or slow weight gain
  • Irritability or “colic”
  • Gas and reflux - excessive spit up from taking in too much air at the breast
  • Fussiness at the breast or arching away from the breast
  • Chewing or biting on the nipple
  • Coughing or choking while nursing
  • Spilling milk when nursing
