The easiest reminder is if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. Alcohol leaves the milk as it leaves your bloodstream, it does not accumulate in your breastmilk. When your blood alcohol levels drop, so does your milk alcohol levels. You can generally resume breastfeeding as soon as you feel neurologically normal. A study by Pepino suggests that lactating women may metabolize alcohol more quickly compared to non-lactating women.
If you're in doubt, wait until sober to nurse, but remember there is NO need to pump and dump the milk!!! If you need to pump do so, but save that milk for future use.
